Improve your fuel consumption by 24%
Posted: April 7th, 2011Driving smarter can improve your fuel consumption by a staggering 24%, and even greater increases are possible with even more care. The savings can be substantial, especially when you equate it in real monetary terms. With fuel on the increase, achieving improved fuel consumption will save money, especially for businesses with a fleet of vehicles.
The average charge for refuelling a family saloon costs approximately £90-£100 a refill, and with fuel around £1.30 a litre (£5.91 Gallon) for petrol and diesel on or about £1.36 litre (£6.18 Gallon), 24% equates to a saving of £20+ per refill.
For businesses operating a fleet of vehicles, getting their drivers to drive smarter, they would be able to reduce their fuel bill quite considerably; even on a small fleet of say 10 cars is really worth thinking about when the bigger picture is seen. Company cars cover on average 25,000 per annum; this equates to about 3 refills a week, a saving of £3,456 a year per car; 10 vehicles would show an astounding saving of £34,560 a year, well worth considering?
Tips on how to drive smarter without really trying . . .
Below are the outlines of how you can start to improve your fuel consumption.
- Drive Smoothly – No sudden breaking or acceleration.
- Plan your journeys and cut down on short journeys.
- Check your tyres regularly to see if the pressures are correct.
- Make sure your car is serviced regularly.
- Fill the car with fuel once, do not refill when it is only half full.
- Do not use Air Conditioning if you have windows or sun roof open at the same time.
- Remove unnecessary weight, such as, golf clubs, roof racks etc to reduce the weight of the car.
Did you know?
- 40% of journeys in the UK are less than 3 miles.
- Under inflated tyre pressures use more fuel as they cause more drag on your car and for every 1 Bar of pressure your tyre is under-inflated, tyres use 1.5g of unnecessary CO2 per kilometre.
- A car travelling at 40 mph in 3rd gear uses 25% MORE fuel than a car at the same speed in 5th gear.
